Despite recent difficulties London remains the leading financial centre in the world.  With a population of 7.2 million, London is the largest city in Europe and estimates suggest that the City will expand to over 8m by 2020 (source OBS, GLA).  Almost 30% of its population is from a minority ethnic group and there are 50 non-indigenous communities with populations over 10,000.  (Source, ONS)

Over the next 15-20 years, infrastructure projects such as Crossrail, the Olympic Park and regeneration of the Lea Valley, the Tideway Tunnel and major developments in King's Cross, Southwark and the Shard at London Bridge will bring billions of pounds worth of investment and jobs into the capital.

London is the favourite location for European business headquarters and the West End is by some margin the largest retail area in the UK.

Despite this, the capital has the highest proportion in the UK out of work (600,000 and growing), with low skills levels in adults and low aspirations in school children which is affecting short and long term business competitiveness.

Of the thirty three London boroughs, ten are amongst the most deprived in the country with Hackney appearing second in the deprivation index.

There is a widening gap between rich and poor and although it is one of the greenest cities in the world, with 30% of the London area being open space and 147 registered parks and gardens, its inhabitants are producing unsustainable levels of pollution and waste.

Business in the Community In London is committed to working with our members on the issues that we feel demand the most priority in the Capital:

Enterprise:

Supporting the development and growth of enterprise in the areas of highest deprivation

Employability:

Helping to tackle the 400,000 young people in London not in education, employment or training; particularly focussed on hard to reach individuals

Environment:

Supporting companies to tackle climate change through their business, with their employees, through the supply chain and with their customers

Education:

Improving the aspirations and achievements of young people in education across London
