Campbell’s Grocery Products - Making an environmental difference at Worksop

EDF Energy Environmental Impact Award 2006 in association with the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment

Campbell’s Grocery Products Ltd is one of the world’s largest soup manufacturers. In 2000, it began a drive to improve the environmental performance of its Worksop site.

Processes

Campbell’s implemented an Environmental Management System (EMS), certified to ISO 14001 standard, which it has improved on year-on-year. The EMS allowed Campbell’s to identify the key environmental impacts of the Worksop site and take steps to tackle them:

  • Burning fossil fuels - The site changed from coal and oil burning to natural gas burning.
  • Energy consumption – In 2005, the site installed a steam accumulator to the boiler house which enabled less energy to be used when peaks in demand occurred. It also fitted ABB Fuel+™ to increase the efficiency of its gas fuelled boilers.
  • Pollution - The site introduced a Reverse Osmosis Plant into the boiler house which cleansed wastewater so it could be reused in steam production, removing the need for harmful chemicals such as sulphuric acid to be used in water treatment.
  • Waste management - Worksop introduced a purpose built waste and recycling centre.

Impact

  • Burning fossil fuels - Switching to natural gas burning led to a reduction of 15,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and an 80% rebate on Worksop’s Climate Change Levy, leading to financial savings of over £100,000.
  • Energy Consumption – The steam accumulator directly resulted in savings of £14,000 per month and the ABB Fuel+™ has improved fuel use by over 5%. In total, the site achieved a 10% reduction in energy consumption and savings of £200,000 in operating costs over 5 years, despite increases in gas and electricity prices.
  • Pollution - The Reverse Osmosis Plant has saved an estimated £5,000 per year.
  • Waste management – The waste recycling centre and composting operations have enabled the site to recycle, recover or reuse over 65% of all generated waste and reduce landfill by 1,700 tonnes in 5 years, generating £50,000 per annum in revenue on sale of recycled materials and landfill costs. In addition, cutting leaks and heat loss on pipe work saved an estimated £10,000 per annum.
