Steve Duncan
Executive Chairman, UK Retail, Alliance Boots
Steve Duncan, FRPharmS, joined Moss Chemists (now known as Alliance Pharmacy) as a pharmacy graduate in 1974, working in the Northolt branch.
In 1984, following a series of management posts, Steve took up one of two Executive Pharmacist positions within Moss. This role demanded a multi-tasking approach as Steve not only had direct responsibility for half of the company’s sixty branches, but also headed up security, stock operations and the development of NHS and commercial relationships. An appointment to the board of E Moss Ltd followed in 1991 as Buying and Distribution director.
With the acquisition of Moss by UniChem in 1992 Steve’s role changed to that of Marketing Director and five years later, following an intense period of expansion by Moss, Steve took on the role of Operations Director.
In the year 2000 Steve spent a period in the United States where he studied at Harvard Business School. Having graduated from the three month Advanced Management Programme he returned to the UK and was soon afterwards appointed Managing Director of Moss Pharmacy, a chain which at that time had well over 600 pharmacies. (A position which he remained in until August 2007.)
In 2001 took responsibility for the Retail Division in UK, Norway, Netherlands, Italy and Switzerland.
In January 2003 Steve was appointed to the board of Alliance UniChem plc as Retail Director, becoming Community Pharmacy Director at the time of the merger with Boots.
In 2007 Steve was appointed Executive Director of Alliance Boots and Executive Chairman Boots.
Steve lives in Surrey with his wife, Paula, and has two children.
