Unlocking Talent

Growing and nurturing talent image

“Talent is about the inherent quality in people to be good at something. We are facing the biggest restructuring of the world economy since the rise of the USA. Britain needs to urgently address the gap between where the country is today and where we need to be to remain competitive.”

Stephen Howard
Chief Executive,
Business in the Community

Our future prosperity depends on our ability to develop and fully utilise peoples’ talents. Over the next decade, companies will see large numbers of unskilled jobs being replaced by those requiring higher skills.

Research suggests that, by 2014, Britain will need to train nearly two million workers to remain competitive in the global marketplace. The threat to both our economic prosperity and social cohesion if we do not address this challenge is huge.

  • The talentmap project

A ‘talentmap’ is being developed and tested to make it easier for employers to navigate their way through the education, employment and skills systems.

  • The campaign so far

Instigated by the call to action from Prime Minister Gordon Brown at the Leadership Summit in December 2007, Business in the Community is working in a coalition to address the UK’s talent challenge.

  • The Talent Challenge

We are currently witnessing the biggest restructuring of the global economy since the rise of the USA. Over the next 10 years China and India will double in economic size – the UK will be only 25% larger.

  • Turning work experience into work inspiration

Working with some of our members, under the leadership of Stuart Rose, Chairman Business in the Community has spent 18 months looking at the best ways to mobilise business to have a positive impact on  the talent challenge in the UK. One of the key issues identified by over 2,000 business leaders was the gap between young people’s expectations of the world of work and what business expects from new employees.
